Volcanic lava textures and form in Crack in the Ground. Called Crack in the Ground, this slot canyon like feature is a volcanic fissure over two miles long with a maximum depth of about 70 feet. As lava flowed over what is sometimes referred to as a hinge line (a downward slope) subsequent cooling and fracturing resulted in the cracks or fissures. Much of the main fissure can be traversed with only minor rock hopping.
