Montana, east, south central, Wild horse silhouette in the Pryor Mountains at sunset.
The free roaming (wild) horses of the Pryor Mountains are the descendants of once domestic horses. Some from as long ago as the 15th and 16th centuries brought to this region by European explorers but the population also has a percentage of escaped or released animals from more modern times that have also successfully adapted to live in the wild. It seems the BLM has to spend quite a lot of time debunking misinformation about the herd and the lands in which they reside. The positive side is the ability to see these magnificent animals running free in a spectacular and rugged setting.
