A path through old growth Western Red Cedar Forest. Created on traditional 4x5 sheet film.
The Clearwater National Forest in central Idaho has been subject to a lot of logging but some areas of old growth have been preserved. These giant Western Red Cedars are an example. It's fascinating to walk through a grove of an old forest like this. They create their own ecosystem on the forest floor. It stays cool and damp so a healthy population of plants like forest ferns can grow. Western Red Cedars tend to grow in deep canyons where there is ample water and there usually isn't much wind. As a result, it's very quiet while walking under the canopy.
