Montana, east, formations at sunset in Medicine Rocks State Park.
About 61 million years ago, the area now called Medicine Rocks State Park in eastern Montana consisted of sand dunes along a large freshwater river. Over time the sand compacted into soft sandstone. The soft rock was susceptible to wind and weather erosion and over millions of years, the dunes were shaped into the amazing shapes seen today. Petroglyphs carved in the stone by Native Americans date back as far as 12,000 years and there are also a few historical carvings from early pioneers.
