Old fence line under the Sawtooth Range in the Sawtooth recreation area. Howard created this image using 4x5 sheet film with a Wisner Classic camera.
Autumn light glows in an aspen tree in the high mountain country known as the Sawtooth Valley. Winter comes quickly here and autumn is about a brief two weeks in which the aspens leaves seem to glow from the inside. The mountains are in the Sawtooth Wilderness, which is the best-known wilderness area in Idaho (217,000 acres), The Sawtooth Mountains are the crown jewels of Idaho's mountain ranges, has forty-two peaks over 10,000 feet in elevation.
