Description
Oregon, south-west coastline, Waves crashing through a sea cave with evening light reflections. Sea caves can be fun and also challenging from a photography perspective. Extreme contrast with constantly changing conditions and then the potential for a good soaking. When a strong wave is coming in the cave suddenly turns very dark because it's blocking the light at the entrance. It can be a little intimidating and well, let's just say caution is advised. In order to get the perspective I wanted I used a 600mm lens to eliminate the foreground. This simplified the composition and helped me stay as dry as possible. I created the panoramic view by blending two exposures together - a common practice but difficult here because of constantly changing waves. So I used two images with similar wave patterns and manually blended the waters in the center. Contrast, light, shadow and even the mist had to be taken into consideration. So it's pushing the limits of what can be done in many ways. Overall I'm pretty satisfied, it has the kind of mystery and drama I hoped to achieve.
